A door that opens fine but refuses to close is almost always one of five things, in this order of likelihood.
Federal rules have required photo eyes since 1993, and they are the number one cause of this fault. Both units, about six inches off the floor, must see each other. Look for a solid light on each. Clean the lenses, check nothing is leaning in the beam, and aim them at each other.
A stone, a broken roller, a bent section of track, or a bike leaning against the frame. Run your eye down both tracks.
If the down-limit is set past the floor, the door lands, meets resistance, and reverses because the opener thinks it hit a child. Adjust the down-travel a fraction at a time.
Many wall consoles have a lock or vacation mode that disables remotes. If the button on the wall works but the remotes do not, check for a lock light.
Failing springs make the door heavy on the way down and jumpy on the way up. Do the balance test: unplug, release, lift halfway, let go. If it will not hold, that is a spring adjustment.
If the door is crooked, a cable is loose, or you can see a gap in the spring coil, do not keep cycling it. Call for a same-day visit.
